Weimaraner Review

Coat: Short, it sheds, little grooming needed. Not protection against extremes in weather.

Size: females--usually between 23 and 25 inches tall; 55--70 lbs.
males--usually between 25 and 27 inches tall; 65--85 lbs.

Reason for being: Used for hunting pheasant, quail, and other upland birds and waterfowl. They are bred for intelligence, stamina, and to be able to work all day in the field. These dogs love to work and play and have seemingly boundless energy. Weims are versatile dogs with the brains and energy to do almost anything, from obedience, to tracking, to therapy work, to loving companion.

WHEN NOT WORKING, THEY EXPECT TO BE A PART OF YOUR FAMILY AND TO BE INCLUDED IN EVERYTHING YOU DO.

Personality: Intelligent, fun-loving, demanding, strong-willed, devoted to its family, spiteful, loving, bossy, mischievous, responsive, stubborn, willing to take charge if no one else does, and a good friend. Weims are complex and demanding dogs, best for experienced dog owners.

Training: Weims CAN learn to do many things. There are stories of dogs who can turn on a faucet to get a drink, open doors, open the refrigerator, and even one who figured out how to turn on a microwave. They can open the typical fence gate latch in a flash. They can learn as many tricks as you or they think of. Training them to do what YOU want them to do can be a challenge.

Potential Problems: Hip dysplasia, bloat, immune system disorders, dog aggressiveness, separation anxiety, recreational barking.
